Faulkner stifles Generals for home sweep

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner continued its hot start to the 2022 season Saturday as it swept LSU-Alexandria in its home-opening doubleheader.

FAULKNER 5, LSUA 4

Things looked dire for the Lady Eagles in game one as they trailed 3-0 after four and a half innings of play. Faulkner rallied in the bottom of the inning as Nicole Morrison drew a walk and Brianna Cagle singled. Caity Jo Lee then drew an intentional walk to bring Tara Ammons to the plate. Ammons proceeded to stroke a 1-1 pitch over the right field fence to put Faulkner up 4-3 with a grand slam. After Ashlyn Pauwl drove in Odette Lopez on a fly ball to tie the game in the seventh, the Lady Eagles struck again in the home half of the frame. Shelbie Burbage reached on a bunt single and scored on a Gracie Pittman base hit for the walk-off win.

Julianna Thames worked four and a third innings while allowing two earned runs in the start. Meagan Schwieterman worked two and a two-thirds in relief, striking out four and allowing one earned run for the win.

FAULKNER 2, LSUA 1

Faulkner scored early in game two and held on to sweep the series. Ammons singled in Burbage in the bottom of the first for the 1-0 lead. The Lady Eagles added to the advantage in the home half of the fourth as Kaileigh Harrison singled and stole second before scoring on a Burbage grounder for the 2-0 advantage. The Generals got a run in the top of the fifth to cut it to 2-1. Ivey Hill got her first win, striking out two over four and a third innings of work while allowing one earned run. Schwieterman followed with two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief work for the save.

Faulkner (4-0) is set to return to action Tuesday when it travels to Brenau for a doubleheader.
