Spring Hill hands Faulkner first SSAC loss with extra-inning victory

MOBILE, Ala. - Pinch hitter Trey Marshall's sacrifice fly in the 10th inning lifted Spring Hill to a 6-5 upset of ninth-ranked Faulkner here Friday night, handing the Eagles their first loss in Southern States Athletic Conference play.

Faulkner (19-4 overall, 9-1 SSAC) lost in consecutive games for the first time this season, while Spring Hill survived despite allowing 11 walks and four unearned runs to improve to 8-11 overall and 3-4 in the conference.

Faulkner reliever Tyler Carter walked the first Badger batter in the 10th and one out later hit another. Labradford Griffis came on to pitch for the Eagles and, after a passed ball moved the runners to second and third, issued an intentional walk to load the bases, setting the stage for Marshall's game-ender.

Spring Hill scored two runs, only one of which was earned, in the first inning off Faulkner starter Johnny Shuttlesworth and added two more in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. The Badgers then became gracious hosts, allowing the Eagles to score an unearned run in the eighth to draw closer, then three more unearned runs in the ninth as Faulkner grabbed a 5-4 advantage.

Carter tried to save it for Shuttlesworth in the bottom of the ninth, but he couldn't slam the door. After surrendering a walk to open the inning, the Badgers sacrificed the runner to second. With two outs, Spring Hill's Brian Sims singled in the tying run, sending the game to extra innings.

"I'm proud of our guys for battling back," Faulkner head coach Patrick McCarthy said. "You just hate to lose a heartbreaker like that one. You have to have a short memory if you're gonna play this game. We'll come out tomorrow ready to go."

Dauris Holguin had two of Faulkner's five hits, while Ryan Stevens had two of Spring Hill's six hits. The Eagles left 12 baserunners stranded in the game.

The two teams complete their three-game conference series with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. First pitch in Game 1 is set for 1.
