Faulkner overpowers Brenau in straight sets

GAINESVILLE, Ga. - A a five-point run late in set two helped Faulkner clinch a straight-sets victory over Southern States Athletic Conference foe Brenau here tonight 25-18, 25-23, 25-13.

The Lady Eagles logged the win in the opening set, but found themselves trailing 23-20 in set two. A crucial timeout by head coach Tori Bartels helped the team regain focus and hit the breaks on the Golden Tiger threat. Faulkner connected for five unanswered to claim consecutive wins and Brenau never recovered.

Faulkner's dominant attack came out of the middle with Brittnay Renfroe leading the assault. The junior hammered seven kills, hitting an impressive .467, and had three block assists.

Freshman middle Alysa Klassen followed with six kills, hitting .417, and added five block assists.

Junior right side Shelby Woods and sophomore outside Sarah Stout each offered up six kills, hitting .333 and .150 respectively, and had two digs each. Woods had three block assists.

Senior outside Kelsey Bell posted 10 digs and five kills, while junior libero Lindsey Ortner tallied 12 digs to lead the defense and secured five of Faulkner's six service aces.

Junior Morgan Wilson had 14 assists on the night and sophomore Sarah Ford added 11 of her own and had seven digs.

Faulkner moved to an even 7-7 overall and improved to 3-2 in the league. The Lady Eagles will have some time off before heading back into the thick of the SSAC schedule. Faulkner will next face Spring Hill, which currently sits just outside the NAIA Top 25, in Mobile on Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
