Box Score 2 BRUNSWICK, Ga. - Faulkner was looking to continue its win streak as it entered the annual Mariner Invitational hosted by the College of Coastal Georgia here this morning. The Lady Eagles opened the day against a very stout Webber International team, however, that had little trouble securing a victory in four sets 25-16, 21-25, 25-14, 25-16. Faulkner bounced back strong against Marygrove College (Mich.) in an afternoon showdown though with a four-set thumping of its own 25-12, 25-11, 21-25, 25-15.
Webber's Anitaka Knight was a tough weapon to stop in the opener. The stellar outside option hit an impressive .450 with 22 kills.
Karimah Hay followed with 11 kills hitting .417 and added 12 digs and three blocks. Katie Schueman was equally as problematic with 10 kills and five blocks for the Warriors.
Middle hitter Brittnay Renfroe was connecting well with the Faulkner setters tallying 13 kills hitting .346.
Outside Sarah Dubberley followed with nine kills hitting .333 and led the defense with 14 digs while fellow outside Hannah Shanley had eight kills and digs.
Morgan Wilson offered up 20 assists.
Webber hit .336 as a unit while the birds hit just .173.
Faulkner was on the opposite side of a very similar coin in the second bout of the day. The Lady Eagles went to work early and aggressively against the Mustangs to secure their first win of the tournament.
Faulkner changed personnel in set three to create a new look and then found itself in a hole early in the final 25, but managed to spark back to life and throttle through to close the match.
Renfroe was again on point logging 10 kills hitting a staggering .600 while adding five blocks to boot.
Dubberely again followed with eight kills and 14 digs.
Libero Lindsey Ortner led the defense with 20 digs and Cassie Bailie had 15.
Wilson and KK Lo split the setting duties and had 21 and 20 assists respectively.
"We were flat and tired this morning," said head coach Tori Bartels. "We couldn't stop their outside and we struggled in a lot of ways, especially defensively. I was happy to see our setters and middles connecting more and that continued over into our second match. We're starting to identify our weapons and going to go to them more and more. We played significantly better in the afternoon game and we need to learn to bring that type of focus to every match. We are going to face two more very good teams tomorrow. We will get some rest tonight and try to close the weekend on a high note."
Faulkner (3-1) will take on Brenau University Saturday morning at 8 a.m. followed by Coastal Georgia at 2 p.m.
