Faulkner rallies past Martin Methodist in SSAC opener

Box Score

PULASKI, Tenn. - Faulkner battled out of a two-set deficit to earn the win against Martin Methodist in Southern States Athletic Conference action 18-25, 14-25, 25-16, 27-25, 17-15 here tonight.

The visitors faced the biggest challenge of the season when they returned to the court after intermission trailing the Redhawks 2-0.

Faulkner secured a convincing victory after the break, but found itself trailing late in the fourth set. The defense managed to overcome a confident Martin Methodist attack and a rowdy crowed to force the set into extended points and even the match.

The Lady Eagles then halted two-point rut at match point in the fifth showdown to push the final bout into extended numbers to gain the win.

"We came out completely flat," said head coach Tori Bartels. "We couldn't pass, were were putting the setter in the net and our offense was constantly out of system. We faced a 2-0 situation at intermission and something switched on in the team. They decided they wanted to play, they wanted to win. We could have easily lost it in three sets, but they fought and fought hard and won. It's not the prettiest win ever, but I'll take it. The effort says a lot, but if we play like this tomorrow, we won't have the same result."

Sarah Dubberley led the Lady Eagle offense with 11 kills and tallied 13 digs in the double-double performance.

Kiki Coombs really stepped up for the visitors with nine kills hitting and impressive .692. The freshman also had three total blocks.

Brittnay Renfroe had nine kills hitting .389 and dominated defensively with six total blocks.

Not to be outdone, Alysa Klassen also contributed six total stops at the net and also had six kills.

Libero Lindsey Ortner was fantastic for the Lady Eagles leading the way with 15 digs.

Morgan Wilson set the heavy side of the 6-2 offense logging 22 assists while Jordan Jones added 12.

Faulkner (10-3/1-0 SSAC) will face Bethel (5-6/2-1 SSAC) in league play tomorrow afternoon. The match is set for 3 p.m. in McKenzie, Tenn.
