Koenig's basket completes Mobile comeback for 79-77 victory

Box Score
MOBILE, Ala. - Kali Koenig's 17-footer with a second left completed a dramatic Mobile comeback in the final six minutes, lifting the Lady Rams to a 79-77 victory here Monday night in a Southern States Athletic Conference shootout at the Pharr Gymnasium.

Faulkner (3-3 overall, 0-2 SSAC) had fought back from a 10-point, third-quarter deficit to lead by eight at 65-57 on a pair of Faith LeGate free throws with 6:12 to play in the game. Mobile hit six 3-pointers in the final six minutes, the last coming from Starla Daggan that tied it at 77 with 38 seconds on the clock.

After Brandy Alley missed a jumper for Faulkner, Mobile rebounded and called timeout with 5.7 seconds left. With the new rule in women's college basketball, the Lady Rams were able to advance the ball to their side of midcourt for the inbounds, and Koenig took the pass and hit the jumper that ultimately won it.

The Lady Eagles' Olivia Adamson fired up a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer that missed, sending Reed Sutton's to a heart-breaking setback. Faulkner seemed to do everything it needed to do in the second half to win, including outrebounding the Lady Rams in the final 20 minutes and making all 15 of its free-throw attempts. The effort still fell short.

"We did everything we needed to do to win, but just didn't finish it," Sutton said. "The only disappointing thing for us was the fact that the players making the big shots for them were the ones we knew had to make them, and we weren't able to stop them. It was a fun basketball game to play in and to coach. I'm very proud of our ladies for their effort and fight. I just hate that we came up short."

Legate's 24 points led Faulkner, which also got 15 points from Adamson. Erichea Barnes added 12 and China Leary 10 for the Lady Eagles. Brandy Alley chipped in eight points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds as Faulkner outboarded Mobile by eight in the decisive second half. Starla Daggan had 20 points while Koenig added 15 for Mobile (5-1 overall, 1-1 SSAC). Molly Speed, who had three 3-pointers in the closing six minutes, finished with 14.

The Lady Eagles had their best 3-point shooting half of the season, making six of nine attempts in the opening 20 minutes, but couldn't convert in the paint. Mobile outscored Faulkner 16-6 inside, turning a one-point lead after one quarter into a 39-31 advantage at the break. The Lady Rams outrebounded the Lady Eagles 24-17 in the first half, earning seven more second-chance points than Faulkner. Those numbers changed in the third and fourth quarters, setting the stage for the frantic finish.

Faulkner travels to Montevallo to battle the Falcons Saturday afternoon at 1:30.
