Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. - After seeing a 17-point lead flip into a seven-point deficit, Concordia regained control down the stretch and upset Faulkner 73-67 here Monday night in a non-conference battle at Tine Davis Gymnasium.
The Hornets (3-6) led by 17 in the first half but Faulkner's Di'mar Hill brought the Eagles back. The Concordia lead was four at halftime before the junior point guard took command. He scored six of his 19 points in the first seven minutes of the second half to lift Faulkner to a 50-43 advantage with 13:02 to play. From there, Concordia's Jamie Howard and Ken Atwood put the Hornets on their backs, and the Eagles had no answer. The pair combined for 23 second-half points, with Washington's 3-pointer at the 7:39 mark giving the visitors the lead for good at 54-53.
The margin grew to seven with under four minutes left on an Atwood basket, and the Eagles never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
"No energy, and that's my fault," said Faulkner head coach Scott Sanderson, whose team fell to 4-7 on the year. "We didn't do anything well tonight. We didn't shoot it well, and we didn't rebound it well, especially on the offensive end. We'd defend well on the first shot, but couldn't get the rebounds and they controlled the pace of the game late. It's frustrating, especially considering we have to find that energy level in a short turnaround."
Hill finished with 19 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles, while Monta Sanford and Nick Drake each had 11. Atwood's 22 points paced the Hornets, with Washington adding 13. Concordia, which fell to Faulkner by nine last month in Selma, outrebounded Faulkner 40-34, with 14 coming off the offensive glass.
The Hornets took advantage of Faulkner cold shooting and defensive breakdowns to build a big early lead, with a Tadarius Neely basket staking the visitors to a 29-12 advantage with 5:32 left in the first half. Drake's pair of 3-pointers sparked an Eagle rally, however, with a 14-2 stretch drawing Faulkner close at the half. The Eagles' Lucas Luttrell had a 3-point shot rim out at the buzzer, sending Concordia to the locker room on top 33-29.
The Eagles host Thomas University Tuesday night at 7 at Tine Davis Gymnasium.
