Brescia's 3-pointers, second-half run knock out Faulkner 88-69

Box Score
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Brescia relied on a 3-point barrage and benefitted from a 20-0 run in the second half to race past Faulkner 88-69 here Tuesday afternoon on the final day of the Auburn Montgomery Holiday Classic.

The Lady Eagles, who dropped their fifth game in a row to fall to 4-8 season, actually led the game 55-54 when China Leary knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:52 to play in the third quarter. The Lady Bearcats (7-7), who made 19 3-pointers on the day, scored the next 20 points to build a 74-55 advantage at the 4:02 mark of the fourth quarter. Faulkner never got closer than the final margin the rest of the way.

"Late in the third quarter and for most of the fourth quarter we played terribly and lost our composure," Faulkner head coach Reed Sutton said. "It was like we looked at our game plan and decided to do exactly the opposite. There are no excuses. I'm tired of excuses. I love our student-athletes, but that doesn't mean we are going to accept what happened out there today."

Kelsey Kirkpatrick made seven of Brescia's 3s, and finished with a game-high 24 points. Shelbi Samsil also hit seven shots from long range, adding 23 points to the Lady Bearcat effort. Julie Whitfill added five 3-pointers of her own on the way to a 17-point day. Olivia Adamson topped the Lady Eagles with 18 points, 16 of which came in the first two quarters. The junior had her second double-double in the event, adding 10 rebounds. Faith LeGate was next for Faulkner, scoring 16 points and grabbing eight rebounds.

Brescia's 3-point prowess began early, with the Lady Bearcats knocking down six shots from behind the arc in each of the first two quarters. Samsil had five, Kirkpatrick four and Whitfill three as Brescia led most of the opening 20 minutes. Behind the primary inside play of Adamson, the Lady Eagles were able to tie it at 41 in the final minute of the half, only to have Samsil's long bomb in the closing seconds give the Lady Bearcats the three-point lead at the break. Faulkner trailed headed to the locker room, despite dominating the backboards 30-13, which included 14 off the offensive glass.

Faulkner gets back into Southern States Athletic Conference action after the Christmas break, traveling to Pulaski, Tenn., to face 20th-ranked Martin Methodist on Jan. 2. The game tips off at 2 p.m.
