Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A well-orchestrated Faulkner (3-4) set play with just 38 seconds remaining in regulation forced tonight's contest into overtime before the Eagles shut the door on the 91-84 victory over Carver College (1-8) here at Tine Davis Gymnasium.
Faulkner trailed for 29 1/2 minutes, and by as many as 11 points, before sparking a 9-to-2 run that culminated with a Lucas Luttrell strike in the paint courtesy of a Scott Sanderson play call durning a pivotal timeout with less than a minute remaining on the clock.
The early deficit was created, in large part, by the dominant shooting of Carver's Donavan Gardner who tallied 21 points in the first half. The hot-handed guard forced the Eagles to retool the defense, but that shift payed off as Gardner was held to just seven second-half points.
Overtime was completely lopsided with a poised and confident Eagle squad controlling the additional five minutes of play. Faulkner outscored the Cougars 14-7 and knocked down 9-of-11 free throws.
Logan Jozwiak was brilliant for the Eagles with a double-double effort on his season-high 23 points and 11 rebounds.
Marquis Grays also had a season-high scoring summary with 20 points. Half of that figure was tallied at the free throw line which included a 5-for-6 effort in overtime alone. Grays also had five boards and four assists.
Not to be outdone, Luttrell also posted a season-best point total with 18. He also added eight rebounds.
Matt Maddox had nine points and seven rebounds for the Eagles.
"That was a gutsy win tonight," Sanderson said after the game. "We had to change some things when [Garner] started hitting shots early, but that worked out well in the second half. We did a great job of staying out of foul trouble late and got some great work from some of the guys off the bench. I thought Daniel Brooks did an outstanding job of going in there and giving us the spark we needed at the right time."
Brooks had five points in the contest, four of which came in just 16 seconds on either side of a steal he secured near the midway point in the second quarter.
Faulkner will next host Pensacola Christian on Saturday at 4 p.m.
