Faulkner finds no redemption against Bryan

Box Score

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Lady Eagles were looking to even the score against Bryan (Tenn.) after falling to the Lions in five sets in the Faulkner Invitational last weekend. The teams traded blows through the first two sets before the Lions (4-3) took the lead at the close of an extended points third round. The Lady Eagles (0-6) seemed to have things well in hand midway through the fourth bout, but squandered a seven point lead and ultimately the match. The Lions clinched the win 22-25, 25-21, 30-28, 25-22 here in the NAIA Southeastern Challenge hosted by Union College.

Faulkner fell back into a self-destructive routine after posting 45 errors, 35 of which were offensive, in the outing. The attack blunders drove the team hitting percentage into the floor allowing for only .030 efficiency on the swing. Compounding the problem was a season-high eight serving errors and a pair of net violations.

Despite the errors, Faulkner did take control of the must-have fourth set, but the Lions sparked a 17-7 run near the half way point dealing the Lady Eagles a deflating loss. Bryan's final four points came on Faulkner attack errors.

"We can't expect to win if we keep giving huge quantities of points away," said head coach Tori Bartels. "I know we have a young team, but this is routine volleyball. No coach expects every attack to be a kill, but at some point you do expect more of the attacks to be in the playable area. We're playing reserved and scatterbrained too much of the time and we can't afford that. Tomorrow will be another brutal day of competition. If we're not ready to compete we shouldn't expect a different outcome."

Alysa Klassen and Daijah Washington led the way offensively with nine kills each. Klassen added six digs and a pair of solo blocks while Washington offered up 12 digs.

Jordan Linder had eight kills and four digs.

Krystalynn Leomiti had seven kills.

Katie Musser dished out 34 assists and dug 16 shots while Julianne Wilkes and Cassie Bailie had 23 and 14 digs, respectively.

Faulkner will look for its first win of the season against Union on Day 2 of the Challenge tomorrow. The Lady Eagles will close out play here against Warner at 3 p.m.
