Box Score MOBILE, Ala. - Faulkner was looking to make a big move in the Southern States Athletic Conference standings with an upset over Mobile (11-5, 5-1 SSAC) here this evening, but despite clawing back from a 2-0 deficit to claim a late match win, there wasn't enough in the tank to topple the Rams in the 25-18, 25-22, 20-25, 25-19 loss.
Faulkner's (6-10, 3-2 SSAC) defensive net play began to rev up in set two and was at full strength by the third bout helping the visitors secure their first win. A strong block remained the Lady Eagles' biggest asset through the remainder of the contest, but a relentless Mobile attack was enough to keep the visitors at arm's length.
Offensively, the two teams were in the same ball park on efficiency with the Rams edging the Lady Eagles .175 to .110 in hitting percentage. The two teams were also close on total errors, with Mobile committing four more overall than the visitors.
Faulkner dominated with 11 total team blocks to Mobile's five, but it was the kill margin that proved the deciding factor in the outcome. The home team out-blasted the Lady Eagles 52 to 38, a difference of just two points in the total loss margin. Mirella Gatterdam accounted for 40 percent of the Ram's kills with 21 on the evening.
Kiki Coombs, who missed the first 11 matches of the season, was the kill leader with 10, hitting an impressive .300. She also had two block assists.
Cassie Bailie and Alysa Klassen followed with six kills each. Bailie added 14 digs and three block assists, while Klassen had five total blocks and three digs.
Tori Marchant had six total blocks and four digs.
Katie Musser led in the assists and digs columns with 17 and 15, respectively, while fellow setter Krystalynn Leomiti offered up 13 offensive assists and four block assists.
Libero Julianne Wilkes and outside hitter Daijah Washington each at 12 digs.
Faulkner will next travel to New Orleans where they will take on Loyola in and SSAC showdown at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
