Faulkner holds off Mobile surge, wins 74-66

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - After holding two of the top shooters in the nation to just five combined points in the first half, Faulkner (11-4, 3-2 SSAC) stiff-armed a strong third quarter Mobile (7-5, 2-3 SSAC) surge to clinch its third consecutive Southern States Athletic Conference victory with the 74-66 decision here tonight at Tine Davis Gymnasium.

The Lady Eagles produced three double-digit scorers and were paced by Olivia Adamson who was a rebound shy of a double-double with 18 points and nine boards.

Shelby Williams followed closely with 17 points and had four assists while Faith LeGate was also just a rebound shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine snags off the glass.

Faulkner's defense did an outstanding job of helping keep Starla Daggan and Kali Koenig from wrecking havoc early in the game. In fact, the Ram's shot just 18 percent from the field as a unit under outstanding pressure for the Lady Eagles over the first 20 minutes of play.

Daggan, who entered the matchup fresh off of a 42-point tally against Breanu which helped anchor her NAIA Player of the Week honor, produced just four points in the first half, though she went on to lead all scorers with 20 on the night.

Koenig overcame her one-point first half effort to gain 14 in the contest.

"I thought our first-half defense was great," said head coach Reed Sutton. "Daggan and Koenig probably held themselves more than anything early on, but when Mobile came back strong in the third period we bent, but didn't break and that's big. We made our free throws and were good off the glass and finished well and that's exciting. We're playing well now, but I still believe the best is in front of us and that's where you want to be. You want to be playing well in December and January, but playing your best in February and so on and I think we're getting good contributions from the bench and that's going to makes us better down the road."

Faulkner will next host Loyola in SSAC action at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
