MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner's men's soccer team (9-4-1, 3-3 SSAC) defeated Southern States Athletic Conference foe Middle Georgia State 1-0 in a strong defensive battle at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The lone goal in the match came in the 12th minute when Renan de Sousa crossed a free kick into the box that found the head of Augusto Camara. That pass fell at the feet of Victor De Souza who touched the ball into the net.
Faulkner would have many chances in the first half, but strong goalkeeping from Benjamin Pelz kept them out of the net.
The Knights best look of the game came in the 42nd minute when Caio Calado (9-4-1) was caught out of position, and an MGA player took a shot from just inside half field. The ball went over Calado's head but bounced into the crossbar and into Calado's hands.
The Eagles dominated the second half as well, outshooting the Knights 11-4, but Pelz would make seven of his 13 saves in the second 45 and would hold Faulkner to one goal.
Calado only needed to record one save in the match, but held MGA scoreless for his seventh shutout of the season.
The Eagles will face off against No. 19 Dalton State next Saturday at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
