Eagles drop third straight with 15-13 loss at Edward Waters

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Faulkner found itself 25 yards away from its first Sun Division win of the season before coming up short on a fourth down run. The Eagles failed to gain on the decisive play of the game, falling to Edward Waters 15-13 Saturday.

The Tigers struck early and quickly, amassing all of their points in the first quarter. Darrian Hall intercepted a Faulkner pass off of Gianni Narcisse's interception to set up the opening score. Derrick Jones hit David Beeks on a 14-yard touchdown strike with 6:29 to go in the opening quarter. Jones then connected with Richard Montgomery on a 23-yard pitch-and-catch with 1:01 left in the frame. Tyler Gilbert punched in the conversion run to move the lead to 15-0.

Faulkner got off the deck on the ensuing possession, marching 74 yards on 13 plays and capping the drive when Josh Gaines (JR/Birmingham, Ala.) punched it in from a yard out. Alvin Renteria (SO/Phenix City, Ala.)'s kick proved true, cutting the score to 15-7.

Edward Waters threatened to add to the lead before halftime when Ishmael Sanders lined up for a 35-yard field goal that sailed wide left with two minutes left before intermission. The Tigers later moved the ball to the Faulkner 25 and threw an incomplete pass as time expired in the second quarter.

Faulkner pushed the opening drive of the second half to the Edward Waters 35 but turned the ball over on downs. Edward Waters returned the favor on its first drive of the third quarter, stalling on the Faulkner 28. EWC intercepted a pass to halt the next Eagle possession.

Faulkner finally threatened again late in the third quarter when it drove to the Tiger 13 before putting the special teams unit on the field. A  roughing the kicker penalty extended the possession, allowing the Eagles to finish what they started as Gaines put it in from the 2. Faulkner's conversion attempt failed, leaving the Eagles down 15-13.

Faulkner later mounted a 10-play drive that stalled at the Edward Waters 43 before allowing Ryan Curran (JR/Pell City, Ala.) to bury the Tigers at their own 1 with a 42-yard punt.

Faulkner took back over the the Tiger 34 with 2:22 to play. They tallied nine yards on the next three plays and called timeout to set up the final sequence. The hand off failed to gain, handing the ball back to EWC with 1:01 left to the end game.

The Eagles ran 71 plays for a total of 224 yards. Edward Waters countered with 59 plays for 263 yards.

Faulkner (3-4, 0-3 MSC Sun Division) travels to face Webber International Friday night.
