Ten-man Faulkner comeback effort falls short

Box Score

An 18th minute red card shown to goalkeeper Caio Calado saw Martin Methodist (9-7, 4-3 SSAC) take a 1-0 lead on the ensuing penalty and play a man up over Faulkner (6-8-2, 2-5 SSAC) for the remainder of the 4-2 Redhawk victory in an SSAC matchup Thursday night in Pulaski, Tenn.

The pivotal moment in the match came when Calado came out to stop a Martin Methodist chance. The referee ruled that Calado had not made a play on the ball and took down the attacker and ejected the Eagle goalkeeper. Franco Sagula came on in goal, replacing a field player to face the penalty kick and the rest of the match. Calado made one save in 18 minutes and Sagula stopped two shots in 72.

The RedHawks used the man advantage to jump to a 3-0 advantage by the 32nd minute before Pedro Moura converted a penalty kick to set the score at 3-1 at halftime.

The Eagles battled back in the second half and were within one goal of a tie after Augusto Camara found Dave Chesterman in the 77th minute for the Englishman's third goal in two games.

Martin Methodist found an 81st minute goal to put Faulkner away and finalize the score at 4-2.

With the loss, the Eagles are eliminated from SSAC playoff contention. They can finish with a tie for sixth with a win at Bethel and a Dalton State loss against Martin Methodist on Saturday, but due to the 2-1 loss in Georgia earlier this season, the Roadrunners would win the tiebreak over the Eagles. Faulkner's season will conclude Saturday afternoon at 2:30 at Bethel (Tenn.).
