Grant hangs 30 on Pensacola Christian as Faulkner romps

Box Score

Angela Grant (FR/Hoover, Ala.) is a true freshman but that was far from evident Tuesday night as Faulkner dispatched of Pensacola Christian 72-57.

Grant showed off a rare back-to-the-basket prowess against Pensacola, scoring with an array of post moves of wowing the Faulkner bench and fans alike as she poured in 30 points and grabbed six rebounds.

"We play back-to-the-basket post. She had some offers from some higher level schools but she wanted to play back-to-the-basket," Faulkner Head Coach Reed Sutton said. "For the record, I think she made the right choice."

Faulkner lead by as many as 13 in the first half before Pensacola Christian mounted a comeback to slice the lead to 49-47 with 18 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Faulkner made the most of the waning seconds, doing what it did so effectively over the course of the evening and feeding Grant in the post. The freshman hit the turnaround just before the buzzer to stretch the lead back to four. The Lady Eagles never looked back.

"I liked that we finished them tonight," Sutton said. "We got a lead and they hung around for a little bit, but we went out and finished them in the fourth quarter."

Faulkner also remedied its turnover issues at least for the night. After turning the ball over 57 times during the two weekend games, the Eagles committed only 14 Tuesday.

"I'm as happy as I have been in a long time," Sutton said. "We watched the film of all 57 turnovers we committed in two games. Tonight, we fixed it. Pensacola isn't really a turn you over kind of team, but we fixed it."

Nicole Shirley (SO/Tuscumbia, Ala.) paced the team in rebounds in her season debut, grabbing 13 boards while dishing out a team high four assists. Micala Fisanick (FR/Troy, Ala.) and Ashlyn Adkins (SO/Locust Fork, Ala.) each scored nine points for Faulkner.

Sutton's team hits the road this weekend for a trip to Cleveland, Tenn. to take on Lee University. Faulkner plays at home again Saturday, Nov. 24 when it hosts Carver College.
