Faulkner falls in five against Florida College, advances to quarters

Box Score

The Lady Eagles suffered a 19-25, 26-28, 25-22, 25-15, 15-11 loss to fourth-seeded Florida College (in the final SSAC Volleyball Championship pool play match Friday morning at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl. Despite the loss, Faulkner advanced to the quarterfinals Friday night at 5 against Loyola.

After taking the first two sets, the Lady Eagles suffered a close defeat in the third set that turned the tide of the match. The fourth set was fairly close until a long rally which seemed to be won by Faulkner was overruled late by the referee who ruled the Falcon attack was touched on the way out. From that point, Florida College took over the match and went on to dominate the set.

After losing the first point of the fifth set, the Falcons never trailed in the decisive frame. Eight kills lifted Florida College to the win and first place in the pool as the Lady Eagles fell to second. "Florida College did a very good job of hitting around our blocks and keeping us from getting our offensive system which caused a lot of free balls and roll shots," head coach Tori Bartels said.

Because the knockout stages are based on regular season seeding, Faulkner was given the lowest seed remaining as its quarterfinal opponent. The seventh-seeded Wolfpack defeated William Carey 3-1 Thursday and advanced as well. The Lady Eagles took down Loyola 3-1 at home before defeating them 3-0 in New Orleans. "One set, one game, one match does not define your season," Bartels said." "We focus the body of work and the positive. We focus on what we need to fix but we always talk about negativty. So we lost, it's part of the game. How you recover is what you really see in teams."
