Faulkner tops Lady Toppers as three score in double figures

Box Score

Faulkner did most of its scoring in the first half Saturday as a trio of starters hung double digit point totals in a 70-61 win over Blue Mountain.

"That's all we kind of harped on after the game was that we didn't make shots. Today we made them," Faulkner Head Coach Reed Sutton said. "Fortunately, we made enough of them in the first half to ride us because that second half was brutal. We didn't get the offensive flow and the execution that we had in the first half. I'm hoping we didn't regress a little there."

Kayla Key (JR/Hartselle, Ala.) got the scoring started for the Lady Eagles, burying a three off an Angela Grant (FR/Hoover, Ala.) assist. The trend continued as every starter got in on the scoring act in a back-and-forth first quarter. The Lady Eagles capped the quarter on a 6-0 run to up the lead to 21-15.

Sutton's squad was up 43-30 at half and stretched the advantage to 17 in the third quarter before Blue Mountain worked its way back into the game. Emilee Murr dropped in a three with 1:25 to play to narrow the deficit to nine. Jada Taylor's three with 19 seconds left cut the Faulkner lead to 68-61. Ashlyn Adkins (SO/Locust Fork, Ala.) drained a pair of free throws to set the final score.

"There were lapses. They're not going to beat themselves. You've got to go beat them. And when you've got them down, you've got to go and put the foot on the throat. You know, 12 for 25 from the line is not a foot on the throat," Sutton said. "We had plenty of opportunities to make a couple of plays and put a foot down and we didn't do it."

Adkins headed the scoring for Faulkner with 18 points. Key dropped in 13. Micala Fisanick (FR/Troy, Ala.) had 10.

Murr had 21 to lead Blue Mountain. Taylor finished with 13 for the Lady Toppers while Alexis Taylor scored 11.

Faulkner (6-2, 1-1 SSAC) plays again Friday at noon when it hosts Fisk for Elementary Day.
