Lady Eagles take road loss against Brewton-Parker

Box Score

Brewton-Parker scored the opening bucket of the second quarter to take a lead it would never lose Thursday on the way to a 77-72 home win over Faulkner.

Janyah Stargell dropped a shot with 9:47 left in the opening half to put BPC up 20-19. The bucket was part of a 14-2 run that drove the advantage to nine points before Angela Grant (FR/Hoover, Ala.) momentarily slowed the bleeding with a shot at the 6:54 mark. Brewton-Parker answered with back-to-back three pointers from Latoya King to push the lead to 13. A pair of Kayla Key (JR/Hartselle, Ala.) triples aided a 13-7 Lady Eagle run that wrapped the first half and left Faulkner down only seven at the break.

"We didn't do a good job defending their top players," Faulkner Head Coach Reed Sutton said. "We gave their best shooter too many three point looks in the first half. In the second half, we gave their best driver easy drives. Then, clearly, our free throw shooting was poor."

Faulkner got the deficit down to four with 90 seconds remaining in the third quarter but never could draw closer. The teams shot an identical 42.1 percent from the floor in the game. Faulkner hit 40 percent of its three-pointers while Brewton-Parker made 40.9 percent. The only notable shooting differential came at the free throw line where BPC shot 69 percent on 29 attempts while Faulkner hit 53.8 percent of its 26 attempts.

Key paced Faulkner with a career high 21 points to go along with a career high seven assists. Grant added 14 points and seven rebounds while Micala Fisanick (FR/Troy, Ala.) had 12 points.

"On a positive side, Kayla Key played really well at the point," Sutton said. "She shot it and distributed it well. She also handled their full court pressure very well. Taylor Jones (JR/Montgomery, Ala.) played well off the bench too."

Jones had eight points and three rebounds in only 11 minutes of action. King topped Brewton-Parker with 25 points. Joy Hadley finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Dominique Haynes finished with 17 points and eight rebounds.

Faulkner (10-7, 3-5 SSAC) returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. at Florida College.
