Eagles and Falcons stalemate in SSAC showdown

Box Score

Faulkner tied 1-1 in its first overtime contest of the season Thursday night against Florida College after first half goals from each team were the only scoreboard ignitions of the contest.

The goal that will most be remembered, however, is the one that did not stand. Guilherme Mondaini (JR/Rio das Ostras, Brazil) floated the goalkeeper from 30 yards out and was surrounded by celebrating teammates in the 102nd minute after appearing to have scored the golden goal. In the midst of the jubilation, the officials determined that a Faulkner attacker was in an offside postion impacting the goalkeeper's ability to make a play on the ball, pulling the goal out of the net and continuing with the second half of overtime.

Faulkner continued to knock on the door in extra time as the Falcons hunkered down to hold for a draw. Nobody held the door shut with more intensity than Florida College goalkeeper Adam Rahman who turned away several crucial opportunites down the stretch to preserve the draw.

Mateus Cesar (SR/Salvador, Brazil) dribbled around a defender in the midfield before passing to his left to Pedro Moura (JR/Garanhuns, Brazil). A one touch pass back to Cesar left him one-on-one with the keeper 12 yards out for a finish off the left post and into the net to equalize the match in the 35th minute. The Falcons struck early when a pass from Groutchov Pierre split the centerbacks and found Camilo Arango who finished his isolation chance with Caio Calado (JR/Sao Bernardo Do Campo, Sao Paulo, Brazil) in the sixth minute.

After Cesar's goal, Kyle Beard's team found new intensity and rejuvinated legs which helped them control the rest of the match despite being locked out of the net by remarkable stops. The Eagles took 19 shots in the contest turnign eight on frame.

Calado stopped the other six shots which came his way.

Faulkner travels to Brewton-Parker Thursday. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. eastern.
