Faulkner falls in instant classic to Mobile

Box Score

The Lady Eagles fell 3-2 (25-23, 26-24, 18-25, 20-25, 15-13) Friday night's SSAC crossover match with the Rams in Tine Davis Gymnasium. In spite of the unfavorable outcome, this all-Alabama battle will not be one that will be quickly forgetten by those who witnessed all two hours and 26 minutes of Faulkner's defensive showdown with Mobile. The two teams combined for 258 digs and 26 blocks in the five set epic featuring 27 ties and 15 lead changes in 214 rallies.

The fifth set was a microcosm of the match in a 28 rally burst. Sparking at 4-4, Mobile ignited a 7-2 run to pull away. Faulkner's heart and fight coursed through for a 7-2 run of its own, leveling the decisive set at 13. A Lady Eagle attack error followed by a kill from the night's kill leader, Samantha Nichols (18), handed Faulkner its second straight five set loss in conference play.

After falling in the first two sets by the minimum spread, the Lady Eagles quickly fell down 7-2 in the third but climbed back in with six Ram errors in the next nine points to level the set score at 9.  When the frame reached 14-all following a kill by Daijah Washington (SR/Tallahassee, Fla.), four different players found kills in the next six points from all parts of the floor starting a 11-4 run to claw back into the match.

Faulkner gained a 17-11 lead in the fourth set before Mobile made a 8-3 push to bring the set within one point. Over the final six points, a kill from setter Alyssa Stagner (SO/Sneads, Fla.) centered a span of four Ram attack errors, forcing the fifth set.

The Lady Eagles outperformed Mobile on the block, 15-11, as well as on serves hitting seven aces to the Rams' three.

Julianne Wilkes (SR/Deatsville, Ala.) set a new career high digging 42 of Mobile's 239 attack attempts accounting for 17.6% of opposing offensive destinations. Second on the floor in digs was Stagner who also set a new career high with 29. The sophomore setter completed her double-double comfortably with 41 assists.

Mallory Black (SO/Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Kortney Barnes (JR/Mobile, Ala.) each were in on seven blocks with Black picking up two solos and Barnes one. They each also picked up seven kills. Washington paced the Lady Eagle attack with 13 kills. Alexis McInroy (FR/Elberta, Ala.)'s career high eight kills placed her second among Faulkner attackers on the evening. Ashley Ingwersen (SR/Huntsville, Ala.)'s held the match high behind the service line with three aces.

Tori Bartels will lead her squad back onto the floor for another conference matchup Saturday at 11 a.m. against the Loyola Wolf Pack as part of the Faulkner Tri-Match. They will also face Talladega at 3 p.m.
