Faulkner lights out in Georgia weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

It took just seven sets for the Lady Eagles to come away with two road SSAC crossover wins this weekend with a 3-1 (25-12, 22-25, 25-10, 25-12) victory over Brewton-Parker Friday night and a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-18) result against Middle Georgia Saturday afternoon.

Faulkner 3, Brewton-Parker 1

Faulkner responded to dropping the second set in Mt. Vernon, Ga. by holding the hosts to just 22 points in the final two sets. The attacking pair of Mallory Black (SO/Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Daijah Washington (SR/Tallahassee, Fla.) were untouchable during the match, combining or 21 kills on 40 attacks with just two errors for a cumulative attack percentage of .475.

After cruising through the first set, Faulkner stumbled in the second frame. Tied at 19, Mo Sutphin struck two aces to push the Barons over the edge to win just their fourth set in conference play. Brewton-Parker stifled an early Faulkner run in set three, cutting the score to 9-7. However, Faulkner would win 16 of the next 19 points to seal set three, tying its most lopsided set win of the season (first set vs. Talladega Oct. 12.) Tori Bartels's team took care of the fourth set with the lead never in jeopardy to improve to 4-4 in league play.

During the match, the Lady Eagles gained 58 points from Baron errors, 33 coming from the attack.

Julianne Wilkes (SR/Deatsville, Ala.) recorded 18 digs. Ashley Ingwersen (SR/Huntsville, Ala.)'s dig total matched her jersey number with 11. Alyssa Stagner (SO/Sneads, Fla.) tallied another double-double with 29 assists and 14 digs.

Faulkner 3, Middle Georgia 0

Faulkner pulled even in its overall record and went over .500 in league play for the second time this season during Saturday's sweep of Middle Georgia. The first set took six lead changes before the Lady Eagles pulled enough away from the hosting Knights to open with a lead. Faulkner never drew much separation in set two before a late 7-2 run powered by five Middle Georgia errors put the defending SSAC champions ahead 2-0. One of Kortney Barnes (JR/Mobile, Ala.)'s team-leading nine kills sparked a seven point rally to put the Lady Eagles ahead in set three before a six point run five points later provided the last push needed to complete the sweep.

Black tied Barnes in kills and solo blocks, but edged the junior with an assisted block. Wilkes dug 29 attacks. Samantha Morse (SO/Clarkston, Mich.) and Stagner split time setting with 17 and 13 assists respectively. Alysa Vinson (SO/Pike Road, Ala.) added eight kills and Madison Sides (SR/Spring Garden, Ala.) seven.

Faulkner sits at 11-11 overall and 6-5 in league play with eight points. The Lady Eagles will travel to Talladega to face the Tornadoes Friday at 6 p.m.
