Stout defense pushes Lady Eagles past Pensacola Christian

Box Score

One night after knocking down 17 three-pointers, Faulkner used its calling card defense to scuffle through a torrid shooting performance to pull off a 65-49 win over Pensacola Christian.

The Lady Eagles trailed PCC 25-16 with 7:36 remaining in the second quarter before jumping into a three-quarter court trap and forcing the issue. That defensive shift helped Faulkner to an 11-0 run to close out the half and take a 27-25 lead into the locker room.

Faulkner stretched the run to 40-9 when Kayla Harbin (SR/Hartselle, Ala.) dropped a shot at the buzzer to end the third quarter with a 56-34 Lady Eagle lead.

Faulkner held Pensacola Christian to 29.4 percent from the floor and 25.7 percent from beyond the arc. The Lady Eagles also outrebounded PCC 51-40 while also forcing 21 turnovers in the game.

Angela Grant (SO/Hoover, Ala.) paced all scorers with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Channing Gafford (JR/Athens, Ala.) turned in 12 points and eight rebounds. Ryann Sylvester (JR/Mobile, Ala.) finished with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Faulkner (2-0) plays again Friday when it hosts Southeastern Baptist at 3:45 p.m. in the Jimmy Faulkner Classic.
