Faulkner falls in five-set heartbreaker

Box Score

In a see-saw affair that took nearly every possible point, Faulkner fell to Florida College 3-2 (19-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-19, 15-13) Friday night. Mallory Black (SO/Murfreesboro, Tenn.) launched an attack into the Falcon block and watched the ball sail wide to knot the game. Alyssa Stagner (SO/Sneads, Fla.) grabbed the ball and headed to the service line with the fifth game apparently tied at 13-all. As Faulkner made its requisite substitution and Stagner prepared to serve over top of her newly-rejuvenated teammates, the officials overturned the previous call, deeming that the ball was touched by a Lady Eagle. The sequence left the Lady Eagles down 14-12 and moments away from the eventual game-ender.

The chaotic turn of events punctuated a match that had been competitive throughout. In the first set, Faulkner capitalized on a slew of early Falcon errors to take the quick advantage before closing out with five of the final seven points.

Florida College standout Victoria Trueheart took over the beginning of the second set, sealing six of her team's first six points via kill or ace. Faulkner clawed back into the set and took the lead with a 8-1 run highlighted by three kills from Daijah Washington (SR/Tallahassee, Fla.) and a pair of blocks. The Falcons used a streak of their own, powered by Trueheart, to pull back into the lead and tie the match scoring six of hte last eight.

Six straight points fueled by Samantha Morse (SO/Clarkston, Mich.)'s two kills to open the third set from the Lady Eagles pushed the hosts to a 9-4 lead. Florida College could not get back into the set as the Lady Eagles hit 52.4 percent on 12 kills to take a 3-1 lead. The Falcons forced the decisive frame after sparking a 9-2 burst at 15-all.

Morse's career high 16 kills paced Faulkner's attack. Washington and Kortney Barnes (JR/Mobile, Ala.) also climbed into double-figure kills tallying 10 each. 18 digs from Julianne Wilkes (SR/Deatsville, Ala.) anchored the back row. Stagner, Alysa Vinson (SO/Pike Road, Ala.) and Ashley Ingwersen (SR/Huntsville, Ala.) contributed 14, 13 and 11 digs, respectively. Black's six blocks led the floor.

Faulkner travels to Waleska, Ga. to face (RV) Reinhardt and Columbia International in the Reinhardt Trimatch Saturday at 3 and 5 p.m. eastern time.
