Shawnee leads wire to wire in win over Faulkner

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – Shawnee State opened the game on a 7-0 run and the No. 7 team in the country never trailed in an 80-69 victory over Faulkner in the Penn Station Classic Friday night. Bethan Mackin had 10 points in the game's first 3:07 to push the Bears to a 12-2 lead before Faulkner got the offense going.

The Lady Eagles trailed 20-12 after the first quarter before opening the second with a flurry. After Micala Fisanick scored the first bucket of the period, Faulkner went on a 7-0 run to narrow the deficit to 22-21. The Lady Eagles stayed within striking distance until the final 3:02 of the half when Shawnee went on a 10-0 run to take a 40-28 lead to the locker room.

Faulkner stumbled out of the gate in the third quarter, trailing by as many as 20 in the frame before punctuating the period with a 9-0 run to cut the gap to 12. Faulkner never drew any closer in the fourth quarter.

Each team shot 40 percent from the field. The Lady Eagles also knocked down 10 threes ata 38.5 percent clip. Faulkner won the rebounding battle 43-29. The difference in the game came in the turnover department. The Lady Eagles gave it away 34 times as compared to 15 for Shawnee State. That led to a 37-4 differential in favor of Shawnee State in terms of points off turnovers.

Megan Wilkinson topped Faulkner with 17 points off the bench while knocking down all five of her three-point attempts. Angela Grant finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Channing Gafford had 15 points and eight boards. Ryann Sylvester finished with 11 points.
