Box Score Late game heroics from Ashlyn Adkins (SO/Locust Fork, Ala.) lifted Faulkner (13-15, 6-13 SSAC) over Florida College (11-18, 3-16 SSAC) Thursday night at Tine Davis Gymnasium 52-51 in the penultimate SSAC matchup of the regular season snapping a six game losing streak.
The two sides were knotted at 50 with 29 seconds left in the game and the Lady Falcons inbounding. As they were setting up their play, Sarah Lutz set a moving screen to turn the ball over to the Lady Eagles with 26 seconds remaining. Just like at home against Stillman, with the game on the line, Reed Sutton called on his sophomore guard to make the play. "We got the ball in the hands of the guy we need to." Adkins made her move with about 10 seconds remaining and drove the left side of the lane and dropped in a left-handed layup with just under six seconds left to give Faulkner a two point advantage. Florida College had a chance to draw even when Kynese Davis drew a foul with one second remaining to shoot two free throws. Davis sank the first before rattling out the second and Faulkner picked up it first win since Jan. 26 when it defeated Blue Mountain.
"I'm just really happy for our players," Sutton said. "I'm just happy they are able to experience a win right now because they deserve it. They work hard and fight every single day."
Adkins led the team with 25 points while going five for eight from deep. Angela Grant (FR/Hoover, Ala.) picked up a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds in her return to the starting lineup from injury.
The Lady Eagles will wrap up their regular season against Brewton-Parker on Saturday at 2 p.m. Morgan Sykes (SR/Morven, Ga.) will be honored after the game as part of the senior day festivities.
