Defensive effort helps spur Lady Eagles past Mobile

Box Score

MOBILE, Ala. – Down two All-SSAC starters since the beginning of the month following an injury to Angela Grant (SO/Hoover, Ala.) over the weekend, Faulkner rolled into Mobile facing a tall task against an 11-win squad. Yet, the Lady Eagles refused to make it about who wasn't available Monday night as they ran out a new-look starting lineup to lock down Mobile and walk away with a 57-47 win.

Faulkner limited to Mobile to 27.7 percent shooting from the floor and 25 percent from the free throw line on the night. The game turned in the third quarter when the Lady Eagles overcame a one-point halftime deficit with a 19-6 run fueled largely by the combination of Channing Gafford (JR/Athens, Ala.) and Ashlyn Adkins (JR/Locust Fork, Ala.). The tandem combined for 17 points from the floor in the frame to propel Faulkner to a double-digit lead.

Back-to-back Micala Fisankick three-pointers in the fourth quarter ran the lead as high as 16 points before Mobile started to get back into the game.

Tara Tuck dropped a three for Mobile with 5:30 to play before Kendra Langham's shot with 4:43 remaining narrowed it to 11. The Rams used a couple of Artasia McDowell shots and a Langham free throw to get it down to an eight-point deficit with 2:02 to play but Mobile drew no closer.

Gafford shined for the Eagles with her first career double-double. The junior forward poured in 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Adkins turned in an all-around performance with 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals in the effort. Fisanick had eight points. Olivia Colson (SO/Thompson's Station, Tenn.) had six points and seven rebounds in her first start of the season.

Langham topped Mobile with 14 points. McDowell added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Faulkner (14-7, 4-3 SSAC) returns to action Saturday when it travels to Middle Georgia State for an 11 a.m. tip.
