Eagles notch 51-point win over Covenant

MONTGOMERY – Faulkner ended the game on a 47-13 run to put Covenant College firmly in the rearview mirror for a 114-63 victory Saturday afternoon. The Eagles held a 17-point advantage after a Brady Palmer three with 15:47 to play before C.J. Williamson answered with a bucket for the 19-point margin. Austin Rogers knocked down a three off a C.J. Hines assist with 14:50 left to push the lead to 22. Faulkner got the lead to 30 at the 8:22 mark on another Williamson basket.

Daniel Garmendia drained a triple with 4:04 left for the 41-point lead. Derek Murphy's free throws with 11 seconds left accounted for the 51-point margin.

"To me, that's the joy of it. Guys were on the bench cheering for each other. They really don't have a selfish bone in their body," Faulkner Head Coach Scott Sanderson said of his team, that saw seven players score in double figures Saturday. "They just want to win and compete and have a good time. You could see that on our bench. Guys were cheering for each other."

Faulkner shot 66 percent from the floor, 61.1 percent from three and 86.2 percent from the free throw line.

Jordan Hamlette dropped 19 points in the first half and finished with a game high 21. Garrett Sanderson finished with 20 points. Williamson contributed 18 points and seven rebounds. Rogers had 13 while Hines had 12 points, six assists and three steals. Garmendia notched a career high 11 points while Derek Murphy reached double figures for the first time in his career with 10 points.

"It's a lot of fun to coach. You've just got to keep them going. The worst part is that we're fixing to take 21 days off," Scott Sanderson said. "We're going to do some Zoom calls throughout those three weeks and talk to everybody. We've told them you've got to run a little bit over the break and keep your wind, shoot a little bit every day, so when we come back, we can work on improving."

Barring a schedule addition, Faulkner finishes the calendar year of 2020 with a 26-1 record overall. The Eagles head to the break at 8-0 on the season. The 114-point output is the largest of the Scott Sanderson era. The program record was a 141-point performance against Selma University on Jan. 15, 1991.
