Box Score NEW ORLEANS, La. – Faulkner went up big early, trailed at half, made a run with 10 minutes to go and hit free throws late to clinch a 93-88 victory at No. 22 Loyola Thursday night. The No. 10 ranked Eagles led by as many as 12 in the first half before the Wolfpack went on a 28-11 run to head to the locker room up 47-41.
The teams traded buckets to open the second half before C.J. Jones (SR/Port Richey, Fla.) knocked down a three with 10:28 to play that put the Eagles up 63-61. After Myles Burns tied the game 20 seconds later, Nate Bradley (SR/Concord, N.Y.) and C.J. Williamson (SO/Guntersville, Ala.) combined for a 9-2 stretch that lifted the Eagles to a seven-point advantage. Milan Skundric (SR/Negotin, Serbia) later dropped back-to-back field goals to put Faulkner up 10 with 6:16 to go in the contest.
Loyola made its last run late. After Jones dropped another three with 1:17 to play to run the lead to nine, Tim Cameron converted an and-1 opportunity to slice it to six. Zach Wrightsil made a bucket with 33 seconds left before a pair of Burns shots just six seconds apart put the Wolfpack down 91-88. Skundric drained two free throws with nine seconds remaining to ice the game, the 14th consecutive victory for the Eagles and the first at Loyola since Jan. 24, 2015. The win also marks only the second Faulkner triumph in The Den in its last 10 trips.
Faulkner shot 58.2 percent from the floor in the game including 53.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Eagles also converted 21 of 28 free throw attempts in the game. Loyola won the rebounding battle 38-24 and shot 50.7 percent but only made three shots from deep at a 20 percent clip.
Jones paced Faulkner with 22 points, giving him a total of 60 in his last two games at Loyola. Williamson finished with 21 points for the Eagles. Skundric added 19 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists. Bradley had 13 points, four rebounds and four assists. Jacob Spence (SR/Fernandina Beach, Fla.) finished with a career high 12 points in 11 minutes of play.
Burns had a game high 29 points and 11 rebounds. Cameron had 16 points, eight boards and nine assists. Terry Smith Jr. finished with 12 points while Wrightsil and Tensley Aldridge contributed 10 each.
Faulkner (23-3, 14-1 SSAC) returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. when it travels to William Carey.
