Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner scored 37 runs in Sunday's doubleheader to finish off a four-game sweep of Shawnee that saw the Eagles cross the plate a combined 60 times.
FAULKNER 18, SHAWNEE STATE 0
Faulkner scored 18 runs in the first four innings of game three of the series to put Shawnee squarely in the rearview. After Heath Olive (SR/Birmingham, Ala.) struck out the side in the top of the first inning, the Eagles got the bats going in the home half of the frame.
John Michael Mathews (SR/Birmingham, Ala.) and Jonathan Villa (SR/Ensenada, Mexico) hit back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the first. After courtesy runner Justin Lara (SR/Coconut Creek, Fla.) stole second, Hagen Holmstead (SR/Salt Lake City, Utah) drew a walk to load the bases.
The ensuing walk to Shawn Ross (JR/Fajada, Puerto Rico) forced Mathews home for a 1-0 lead. Lara then scored on a double play ball for the 2-0 advantage.
Mathews drew a two-out walk to start a second-inning rally ahead of a Villa single. When Holmstead drew a walk to load the bases again, Ross doubled to left to drive in two runs and move the lead to 4-0.
The Eagles then hung an eight-spot in the third inning to blow the game wide open. Mario Moralez Jr. (JR/Houston, Texas) drew a leadoff walk and gave way to pinch runner Dejhard Kimbrough. Sam Anthony (SR/Columbus, Ga.) and Collier Rutledge (JR/Sarasota, Fla.) followed with singles that loaded the bases. Eriq White (SR/Snellville, Ga.) hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Kimbrough for the 5-0 lead. Mathews then followed suit with a centerfield fly of his own to drive in Anthony for the 6-0 advantage. Villa then singled up the middle to drive in Rutledge to make it 7-0.
After a Holmstead walk and a Ross hit-by-pitch, Isaac Phillips (JR/Powder Springs, Ga.) stroked a two-run single for the 9-0 lead. Bubba Sangster (JR/Altoona, Fla.) later singled to center to drive in Ross and Phillips to push it to 11-0. Kimbrough scored the final run of the inning on a throwing error.
Faulkner erupted for six more runs in the fourth inning. White had a leadoff single before Reyes-Cruz doubled. Villa followed with a double of his own to drive in White and Reyes-Cruz.
Kimbrough later doubled to drive in pinch runners Aaron Hammer (SO/Franklin, Ky.) and Willy Taveras (JR/Bronx, N.Y.). Rutledge capped the offense with a two-run double that plated Lara and Kimbrough.
Ross and Villa finished with three RBIs apiece while Phillips, Kimbrough, Sangster and Rutledge drove in two runs each. Mathews, White and Reyes-Cruz had one RBI each. Villa highlighted the hit parade with four base knocks. Rutledge had two in the game.
Olive got the win, striking out seven and allowing one hit over three innings of work. Mike Battle (SR/Birmingham, Ala.) worked a scoreless frame while Aaron Hammer fanned four over three hitless innings of work.
FAULKNER 19, SHAWNEE STATE 5
The Eagles scored 19 runs in Sunday's second game, including 10 in the fourth inning to finish off the sweep of the visiting Bears. Phillips doubled to open the second inning before White dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move him to third. Rutledge then hit a sacrifice fly to right-center to drive in Phillips for the 1-0 lead. Justin Lara followed with a triple to deep left-center before Reyes-Cruz homered on a 1-2 pitch for the 3-0 lead.
Villa opened the third with a double before giving way to courtesy runner Kimbrough. White later singled to drive in Kimbrough and Phillips for the 5-0 advantage. Rutledge's single to left-center plated White to make it 6-0.
Mathews got the rally going in the bottom of the fourth when he singled with one out before stealing second. Villa drew a walk and gave way to Kimbrough. Moralez Jr. singled to right to load the bases before turning baserunning duties over to Taveras.
After Mathews scored on a ball in the dirt, Ross reached on an error that plated Kimbrough. Phillips followed with a single to plate Taveras. White's single drove in Ross and Phillips.
Reyes-Cruz later drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Battle. Rutledge made his way home on an error. Moralez Jr. took a hit-by-pitch to drive in Lara. Ross then stroked a two-run double to plate Reyes-Cruz and Tyberius Correa (FR/Riverview, Fla.) to make it 16-0.
Faulkner added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Lara hit a two-out double before Reyes-Cruz singled him home. Mathews followed with a two-run homer to cap the scoring.
The offense was plenty for Zack Glines (SR/Dalton, Ga.) to notch the win. The senior struck out six over four innings of work while scattering four hits and three runs. Moralez Jr. work three innings of relief while allowing two runs on five hits.
Faulkner (6-1) returns to action Friday when it hosts Lindsey Wilson in a doubleheader that begins at 2 p.m.
