Fumbled opportunities cost Faulkner in double overtime

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner (1-1) held a 2-1 lead in the 87th minute when a Pensacola Christian (1-1) corner kick slipped through the hands of Cristobal Romero and Riley Buchalski scattered the loose ball into the net to force an overtime period capped with a golden goal off the head of Clint Peterson in the 108th minute as the home Eagles fell 3-2 Saturday night at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex.

The hosts led twice in the contest, striking first in the 9th minute when Antoine Marques took on a defender and burned a low shot into the opposite corner while falling to the ground. Felipe Pineiro canceled Riley Rhodes 30th minute equalizer with a go-ahead goal sliding in a corner kick that scrambled around in the box before Adrien Alexandre found the open defender.

The Eagles mustered just four shots on target on 17 total shots compared to their nine on 18 Thursday evening on the road. Romero saved two shots in the loss.

Despite the loss, Faulkner won the aggregate series with Pensacola Christian 7-5.

Bob Jones comes to Montgomery Sept. 22 at 5 p.m. for the first ever meeting between the two sides.
