Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | by: Carter Moles

Valiant Effort Falls Short

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Ninety minutes of pressure from one of the top attacks in the country proved to be too much for Faulkner as they fell 3-0 to last season's postseason #4 Southeastern in the season opener Saturday afternoon at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex.

On paper, this matchup had all the makings of a fantasic goalkeeping contest with All-SSAC goalkeeper Megan White between the sticks for Faulkner and All-American goalkeeper Holly Eddins for the Fire. This game lived to those expectations. A 20th minute kick save from goalkeeper Megan White denied Nathalie Saldana from point-blank range kept the scoreline level at the break. Corrine Weissinger fired what appeared to be a certain side-netter to equalize in the 66th minute, but Eddins got her fingers to it to push wide for a corner in the first shot on target. Eddins once again robbed the freshman from Opelika, Ala. in the 86th minute with a diving punch effort to push the ball wide.

Former Lady Eagle Victoria Moran scored what proved to be the game winner in the 65th minute, banking off the left post and in. Jennifer Luna doubled the Fire advantage in the 81st minute heading a corner off the same left post and barely over the line before White dove on top of the ball. Summer Rusher sealed the scoreline in the 83rd with a bottom right corner shot from the top of the box.

White stopped nine shots in the loss. Eddins made three in the win.

The Lady Eagles next counting contest will be October 10 in Pulaski, Tenn. against former SSAC foe Martin Methodist at 5 p.m.
