Defense anvils Roadrunners

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In a contrast to the previous times Faulkner and Dalton State have
played, the Eagles thoroughly dominated 75-53 at Tine Davis Gymnasium tonight. The home
team rode an incredible performance from the court and off the glass to run away with this
matchup, the first conference game of their season, against the receiving-votes visitors. In the
previous chapter of this division rivalry, Faulkner staved off the then 4th-ranked Roadrunners for
a wild 100-97 conference-clinching win. All of the Eagles' wins over Dalton State had been
decided by six points or less until tonight, so this one proved to be quite a change of pace.

After exchanging leads throughout the first eight minutes, Daniel Garmendia staked Faulkner to
an 11-9 advantage, which would hold up for the remainder of the night, with a three-pointer off
the rim. Austin Rogers then got a rebound and the assist to Jordan Hamlette's three, before
Garrett Sanderson followed with a long-range shot of his own. C.J. Hines gave his team a
double-digit lead for good with 7:19 left until halftime with another 3-pointer. This run was just
the beginning of a hot night from the floor for the Eagles, who connected on 41.5% of their
shots, 35% of 3-point attempts and 77.8% of free throws. These metrics stood out against Dalton
State's marks of 29.5%, 15.8%, and 56%, respectively. Faulkner out rebounded Dalton State 45-
39, with 12 of them on the offensive end.

"Yeah, I thought we were very good defensively," said Coach Scott Sanderson about the team's
rally after a slow start. "You know, the problem, we were good defensively, we couldn't score. It
was like, 9-8. Then, all of a sudden, we started getting some stops, we started pushing the ball in
transition. And we moved the ball and spread the ball around, got us shooting threes, Garrett in
the corner or C.J. driving it downhill. You know, that's what we're trying to do in transition, get
open shots."

C.J. Williamson was his usual high-scoring self, leading the team with 23 points, nine rebounds,
and three assists. Sanderson followed him in the scoring column with 20 points and seven
boards. Hines contributed 11 points and three steals, and Hamlette chipped in nine points. Rogers
and Derrick Donigan got seven boards each. Marquel Wiggins led Dalton State with 17 points
and two blocks. C.J. Perry scored 13 points, four rebounds, and four steals, and Antares Gwyn
had ten points and seven rebounds.

The win allowed Faulkner to move past its lone loss of the season to #1 Indiana Wesleyan,
improving to 10-1 entering the conference slate. The Roadrunners fall to 2-5 on the season, but
2-1 in conference play. The Eagles will now travel to Mount Vernon, Ga., to take on Brewton-
Parker in a double-header this weekend.

"Well, we just got to continue to defend and rebound," Coach Sanderson said of the upcoming
series. "If we'll just defend the way we've been taught to defend, and get out in transition, that's
in our favor…. So, I'm more concerned about us defensively, guarding the way we're supposed
to guard, because some nights, you're just not going to make shots. And the nights you don't
make a shot, but you guard, you have a chance to win. And the nights we do make shots and
guard, we're going to win big."
