Lady Eagles finish Faulkner Invitational with two losses

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Hard-fought second sets defined the two matches for the Lady Eagles as they dropped their Saturday matchups in the Faulkner Invitational at Tine Davis Gymnasium.

Life 3, Faulkner 0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-13)
Kortney Barnes's kill gave the Lady Eagles a 8-6 lead, but Life sparked a 19-8 run powered by 14 Running Eagle kills. They would win the set with 17 kills to just 5 errors hitting .343 in the frame.

Alysa Vinson started heating up in the second set, finding four kills and a block as both teams traded punches in the early stages of the set. Two consecutive attack errors from Mary Zimmerman instigated a timeout from Life at 18-15 Faulkner, but a Zimmerman block out of the break started a four point swing to take the lead back for the guests.Trailing 22-21, Faulkner found three straight kills from Vinson, Hannah Bryan and Mallory Black to take a 24-22 lead. After two errors, Katie Jordan's kill gave Faulkner its third set point opportunity. The Lady Eagles couldn't close the door though as a kill and two attack errors put Life into a 2-0 lead.

Faulkner couldn't find its swing in the third, hitting 12 errors to just five kills.

The Lady Eagles ended the match with four blocks and five aces. Life's block proved tough with 13.5 blocks in the morning. Just three Barnes and Vinson tied for the lead in kills with seven each. Alyssa Stagner finished the match with 18 assists and 10 digs.

Keiser 3, Faulkner 0 (25-11, 25-19, 25- 9)

In a rematch of last night's match, Faulkner couldn't match the firepower of the still undefeated Keiser. The Seahawks killed 43 points to just 10 errors while the Lady Eagles hit 23 kills and 23 errors.

Keiser opened the match red-hot with four kills and two blocks in the first six points en route to a 10-1 start. Faulkner chipped away for a 15-9 deficit before another 10-1 run closed the set.

After falling behind 6-1 in the second set, the Lady Eagles sparked a 7-1 run to jump into the lead. With a two point spread, the Seahawks put the set out of reach with an 8-2 run with seven kills.

Six attack errors in the first 18 points put Keiser into a 15-3 lead in the decisive set.

Bryan had eight kills and eight digs to lead the Faulkner attack. Sarah-Gracen Watts finished the match with 14 digs and two aces. Stagner assisted 20 kills. Barnes had six kills, two blocks and an ace.

The Lady Eagles travel to New Orleans, La. to participate in the Big Easy Blastoff hosted by Xavier Feb. 5 and 6.
