Box Score WALESKA, Ga. – Faulkner had its opportunities Saturday but could not overcome five turnovers and four sacks on its way to a 14-6 loss to No. 10 Reinhardt. The visiting Eagles forced took their first drive of the game 64 yards on three plays to set up a 1st and Goal from the 3. After proving unable to punch the ball into the end zone, Faulkner never took control fully away from Reinhardt again.
Reinhardt, which is now 27-0 all time in Appalachian Division play, scored the first points of the game when Billy Hall hit Navarie Solomon on a 58-yard touchdown strike with a minute left in the first quarter.
Faulkner answered on the ensuing drive, covering 56 yards on nine plays and capping it with a 36-yard field goal by
Alvin Renteria. Faulkner added another field goal later in the second quarter when Renteria converted a 32-yarder to narrow the score to 7-6.
Reinhardt added a late touchdown on a 3-yard rush by Devyn Collins with 58 seconds to play. Faulkner's final effort to answer pushed to the Reinhardt 43 before an incomplete pass with nine seconds left capped it.
In between the scoring plays, the teams traded turnovers with Faulkner losing a number of significant opportunities to offensive miscues.
Faulkner took a second quarter possession all the way to the Reinhardt 34 before Ryan Neil picked off a
Kade Young pass at his own 19. The next Faulkner possession reached the Reinhardt 13 before Kellen Neal punched the ball out and Herve Aklotsoe recovered it to thwart the effort.
Rob Gray's team took the opening drive of the second half as far as the Reinhardt 9 before Jalen Everett picked off Young's pass in the end zone to halt the drive again. After
Ovurton Gates intercepted Billy Hall, the Eagles took the ball into Reinhardt territory again before
Caden Davis had to punt it away.
Late in the third quarter,
Phillip Russell recovered a Hall fumble at the Faulkner 29. The visiting Eagles had reached the Reinhardt 34 when the drive stalled and Davis returned to punt once more.
Faulkner's last big chance came with 4:23 remaining in the contest and the road team down 7-6.
Antonio Gurley dropped Hall for a loss at the Faulkner 15, forcing a turnover on downs. Young hit
Jalen Browder for an 11-yard strike to start the drive. As Browder and a pair of Reinhardt defenders struggled at the point of the tackle, Devin Harris punched the ball out. Aklotsoe recovered the fumble to set up the home team's final score of the game.
Faulkner tallied 331 yards of total offense on 69 snaps while Reinhardt had 328 yards on 71 plays. Neither defense proved charitable, as Reinhardt's 29 percent efficiency on third down outpaced Faulkner's conversion pace of 23 percent. The offenses combined to fail on all five fourth down efforts.
Browder topped the individual offensive performances with 116 yards on five catches.
Isaiah Scott added 93 yards on eight receptions.
Alex Dawson paced the Faulkner defense with 13 total tackles including 10 solo stops.
The loss ends Faulkner's nine-game unbeaten streak and hands the Eagles the first setback of Gray's era.
Faulkner (6-1, 3-1) hits the road next week as it travels to Babson Park, Fla. for a clash with Webber International.
