Point finds late offense from deep to knock off Faulkner

WEST POINT, Ga. – Faulkner's halftime lead evaporated over the course of the third quarter Friday as Point rained down seven second-half threes to win 86-78 in the season opener for both teams.

Faulkner entered the locker room up 37-33 and ran the advantage to six before consecutive triples from Marta Casas Gimenez and Iyanna McMillan tied the score at 39. Sheyvonne Owens made a free throw with seven minutes left in the frame to put Point on top. The Lady Eagles responded with a 6-0 run of their own before McMillan converted another three to tie the game at 47. The teams then volleyed the advantage for the final 3:44 of the third quarter with the sixth and final lead change of that duration coming at the buzzer when Hannah Williams knocked down a jumper to put Point up 54-53.

Channing Gafford drooped a three with 7:11 to play in the game to tie it at 62 but the Lady Eagles never took the advantage back. A Williams layup and a Gimenez three put Point up five before Williams hit another runner to push it to seven with 4:18 to play. The home team scarcely looked back.

Faulkner made 54.4 percent of its shots from the floor while Point made 50 percent. The Lady Eagles hit six threes at a 33.3 percent clip. Point countered with 10 makes from range at a 38.5 percent clip. The Lady Eagles turned the ball over 21 times in the contest while Point had 18 such miscues.
Faulkner won the points in the paint battle 32-18 and lost the rebounding struggled 33-31. The Faulkner bench accounted for 36 points while the Skyhawk reserves added only four for the home team.

Williams topped all scorers with 26 points. McMillan added 21 for Point as all five starters finished in double figures.
Nequoia Adams poured in 20 off the bench to lead Faulkner in her collegiate debut while also dishing two assists and grabbing three rebounds.
