BABSON PARK, Fla. – Faulkner's furious attempt at a comeback fell just a little short Saturday as the Eagles lost on the road against Webber International.
Webber scored on the opening drive of the game and scarcely let go of the momentum, opening up a 24-7 lead by halftime. The lone Faulkner score of the opening half came from the defense as
Chris Thompson turned in a 29-yard pick-six.
Kade Young connected with
Jaiveyon Tucker on a 50-yard scoring strike to open the third quarter and briefly narrow the gap to 24-13. Webber followed with rushing touchdowns from Maynard Blackmon and Tremon Bright to seemingly put the game away at 38-13 in the fourth quarter.
From there, Faulkner appeared to wake up. Young hit
Brandon Rudolph on an 8-yard scoring strike ahead of the
Alvin Renteria PAT to make it 38-20 with 7:45 to play. Faulkner then struck again with 4:56 left in the game when Young hit
Ty Gray for a 23-yard touchdown pass. Another Renteria PAT cut it to 38-27.
The Eagles then recovered the onside kick attempt. Young got big completions to
Satyler Wilson and Tucker to help set up the nine-yard scoring strike to
Ty Gray and cut the deficit to 38-33. Young followed by hitting
Hunter Mosley for the two-point conversion attempt, leaving Faulkner within striking distance with 2:39 to play.
The Eagles narrowly missed collecting the ensuing onside kick attempt but quickly forced the Warriors into 3rd and 10 with a chance to get the ball back. Cody Braden then faked the give to his running back and went over the top to Freddie Hughley for a 15-yard strike and the first down, effectively ending the game. The game snapped a streak of 12 consecutive losses for Webber.
Faulkner totaled 348 yards of total offense while WIU amassed 474 in the win. The Eagles also incurred 13 penalties for 144 yards in the effort.
Young passed for 237 yards and four touchdowns while suffering three sacks on the day. Tucker topped the Faulkner receiving corps with 85 yards on five catches.
Antonio Gurley paced the defense with eight tackles.
Phillip Russell and
Kylan Wimbish had six stops apiece.
Faulkner (6-2) plays its final home game of the season next Saturday when it hosts Kentucky Christian for Homecoming with kickoff scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
