Faulkner locks it down late to get past Freed-Hardeman

Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. – Faulkner got all its scoring out of five players Saturday, ratcheting up the intensity in the closing minutes to steal a 78-75 win away from Freed-Hardeman.

A Zach Baugher three with 4:01 to play put the Lions up 74-741. Isaiah Brooks answered with a layup 30 seconds later to slice the Faulkner deficit to one point. Brooks later worked his way to the free throw line where he cashed in both shots to put Faulkner up 75-74 with 2:49 to play.

The Eagles pushed the lead to three with 1:40 to play when Trace Hill converted a drive into a layup. Hill, the longest-tenured member of the Faulkner roster later added a free throw with 26 seconds left to move the advantage to two possessions.

Alex Rush knocked down a free throw for Freed with 17 seconds left to make it 78-75. Wanya King missed a three with seven seconds left before Ryley McClaran missed a shot from deep at the buzzer that would have tied the game. The Baugher three that put the Lions on top proved the final Freed-Hardeman field goal of the game as FHU went the last 4:01 with just one point scored.

Faulkner trailed by as many as eight following halftime after its own offensive drought surrendered the advantage in the first half. C.J. Hines drained a three with 14:24 left in the first half to put the Eagles up 10-3. That shot accounted for the final Faulkner points until the 10:42 mark. In the interim, Freed assembled a 13-0 run that put the Lions up by six. The FHU advantage got as high as nine before Faulkner began whittling away. Brooks made a layup that ignited a 9-0 run that saw Jalon Perry tie the game on a layup with 5:12 left in the half.

Rush and Dawson Bailey answered with threes to send the lead back to the FHU side of the scoreboard. Hines dropped a three for Faulkner with 3:28 left until the locker room and the teams proceeded to trade buckets until the horn sounded with the Lions up 42-36.

Faulkner began its offensive flurry on a Hines layup with 15:37 left in the game. Hill dropped a three just 26 seconds later to leave the Eagles down one. Hill stole the ball with 14:01 left and dunked it two seconds later to tie the game.

After Rush ripped a three with 13:47 left to put Freed back up, Daniel Garmendia matched the feat 14 seconds later to tie it again. Geraldo Lane gave the lead back to Freed with a layup one the ensuing possession and Garmendia answered once more 14 seconds later to knot the game at 58. Brooks converted a layup with 11:55 to play, handing Faulkner its first lead since the 12:42 mark of the first half.

The Eagles worked that lead all the way to 66-60 with 8:49 left before Freed took advantage of another scoreless four-minute Faulkner stretch. Baugher connected on a layup and the bonus free throw with 4:53 left to return the lead to Freed again. Hines tied with on a three with 4:16 left before Baugher answered 15 seconds later, marking the final FHU bucket of the contest.

The Eagles shot 49.1 percent from the floor and 64.3 percent from three. Faulkner won the rebound battle 40-24 and took points in the paint by a count of 30-18.

Hines topped the Eagles with 22 points and six rebounds. Hill added 18 points and six boards while Perry notched 13. Brooks had his first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Garmendia added 12 points and seven boards.
