Eagles host Barons in postseason opener

The Eagles welcome Brewton-Parker onto campus for the first ever soccer postseason match held on campus Thursday at 4:30 p.m at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium. The fourth-seeded Eagles host the fifth-seeded Barons in the opening round of the SSAC Men's Soccer championship with the winner set to face the No. 4 team in the country and regular season champions Mobile.

Recent history has been very kind to Faulkner Men's Soccer program in the first round of the SSAC tournament, winning its last three opening round contests. In 2016, Ian Sagstetter's goal and Diego da Silva's clean sheet pushed Faulkner to a 1-0 win on the road in Mobile and in 2017 Guilherme Mondaini converted the match-tying penalty as a Victor de Souza brace pushed Faulkner over Bethel 4-2 on the road. Most recently, however, it was Sam Kelly's solo run and outside-footed strike that gave Faulkner a 1-0 win at "home" back in April in the spring season at the Emory Folmar Soccer Complex.

The winner tonight will play Wednesday at the same complex the Eagles called home last season as the turf was being reconstructed on campus. The Barons are looking to make their first trip to the semifinals in program history and enter the contest with a 4-11-2 record overall and a 2-4-1 mark in league play.

The two sides played a dramatic match just 12 days ago with Faulkner jumping ahead 2-0 in the first six minutes, the Barons leveling, and then the Eagles pulling away late to win 4-2. The full recap can be read here

Brewton-Parker is led offensively by Samuel Figuerio who has six goals and four assists on the year. Four other players have multiple assists and six others have multiple goals. The Barons produce 1.29 goals per match while surrendering goals at a 2.82 per match average. Jamair Stewart has handled the bulk of the goalkeeping duties with 75 saves in 12 starts.

For Faulkner, Antoine Marques has led the offensive charge with seven goals and three assists while five other Eagles have multiple goals including three each from Kelly and Mondaini en route to a 4-10 record overall and 3-4 in league play. Matheus Rodrigues's three assists ties for the team lead while Heming Solberg Anderson and Mondaini each have two. Nic Fischer has stopped 67 shots in 14 appearances and has played every minute in goal.
