MT. VERNON, Ga. - The 2021 campaign came to a sudden and heartbreaking close in double overtime for the sixth-seeded Lady Eagles who held the third-seeded Barons off the board for 102 minutes on their home field before Kadisha Martina's golden goal saw Faulkner's season end in a 1-0 defeat in the first round of the SSAC Women's Soccer Championship Thursday night on the road.
Keila Cardeiro Carmona was stellar in net, stopping 10 shots; but the 11th Brewton-Parker effort on target, a backheel flick by Martina on the first touch from a Sarah De Gannes pass found the side netting and ended the match, and the season, in the blink of an eye. Faulkner scattered 13 shots throughout the match while placing four on target.Â
The first half was about as even as a half can get, with the Lady Eagles edging the Barons in shots 6-4. However, Brewton-Parker ramped up the attack after the break, shooting 11 times and forcing seven saves from the Spanish keeper to force overtime.Â
Luci Schroder led the Faulkner attack with four shots and two on target. The back four of
Camila Parada,
Kendall Blackmon,
Adamarie Moreno and
Maria Wharton played all 103 minutes in defense while Schroder also played every minute up the field.Â
Nine Barons played every minute with just two substitutions totaling 44 minutes, or just under four percent of all minutes played by the hosts.
Two of the last three matches between the teams have ended with a golden goal, with
Nanako Omae scoring a regular season golden goal in the spring season for Faulkner.Â
The Lady Eagles conclude the season 4-12-1.Â
