THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Faulkner trailed for all of 13 seconds Saturday before turning the game around in the second quarter and downing Thomas 75-32.
Dyani Sheppard made a layup with 6:22 remaining in the first quarter to give Thomas a 6-4 lead.
Channing Gafford answered with one of her own at the 6:09 mark to tie the game.
Morgan Holland gave Faulkner the advantage with 5:07 on the clock with a layup of her own. The Lady Eagles got the lead to 12-6 by the end of the first quarter and scarcely ever looked back.
Faulkner appeared poised to end the opening half on a 15-4 run before Ta'Nija Watson knocked down a layup in the waning seconds of the period to leave Thomas down 34-19 at half. The 22-13 second quarter left Faulkner comfortably in the driver's seat.
Still, it was the third period where
Reed Sutton's team completely put the game away. Faulkner opened the second half on a furious 20-0 run that moved the lead to 54-19. Watson finally got Thomas on the board in the quarter when she knocked down a jumper with 61 seconds left in the period. Faulkner won the frame 22-3 and headed to the final 10 minutes of the game up 56-22.
The third quarter run opened on a Holland layup just six seconds in.
Nequoia Adams followed with a free throw before
Ashlyn Adkins cashed in a layup to set the lead at 20 points.
Micala Fisanick blocked a shot on the defensive end and finished the sequence on the other baseline with a layup. Adams got a tip-in off her own miss before Gafford ripped through consecutive threes to move the lead to 30 points. A Fisanick jumper and back-to-back Burrows buckets set the lead at 54-19.
Faulkner largely emptied its bench in the fourth quarter, outpacing Thomas 19-10 in the frame to rock the game to sleep. The Lady Eagles shot 49.2 percent from the floor and 36.8 from three in the contest while winning the rebound battle 41-30.
Adkins paced Faulkner with 13 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals. Holland added 12 points and six rebounds. Gafford finished with 10 points. The game also marked the return of
Angela Grant, who logged three minutes in her return from a knee injury that limited her to two games last season.
Faulkner (7-6) plays again Monday when it hosts Freed-Hardeman.
