Eagles drop Toppers to move to SSAC semifinals

Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner took a little under four minutes to get it going offensively Thursday night and then scarcely looked back on the way to a 92-65 win over Blue Mountain in the SSAC tournament.

Blue Mountain held a 7-3 lead at the 16:16 mark in the first half before Faulkner put together a 15-0 run to flip the game. Austin Rogers knocked down a three off a Jordan Hamlette assist to cut it to 7-6. C.J. Williamson connected on a put-back with 15:24 left in the opening half to put Faulkner up. The Eagles never lost the lead.

Faulkner ran the advantage as high as 22 points with 1:25 until halftime on a Daniel Garmendia three off a Hamlette assist. The Eagles pushed the lead to a game high 30 points with 28 seconds remaining in the contest when Sakevian Haynes – making his collegiate debut  in the waning minutes – grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in for a bucket before cashing in the bonus free throw for the three-point play.

Faulkner held Blue Mountain to 39.7 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Eagles countered by shooting 44.4 percent from the floor and 45.5 from three. Faulkner won the rebounding battle 48-33 while forcing 21 turnovers.

Brandon Williams topped Blue Mountain with 24 points while Aleksa Vujadinovic had 13 and Micah Powers contributed 12.

Hamlette paced Faulkner with 22 points and eight rebounds. Williamson contributed 15 points, nine boards and four assists. Rogers notched 11 points while C.J. Hines finished with 10 points and seven boards.

Faulkner (23-2) moves to the semifinals of the SSAC Men's Basketball Championship Friday where it will take on Mobile. The winner of the game will claim one of two SSAC automatic berths in the NAIA national tournament.
