MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner's season came to an end Friday evening in a familiar spot and against a familiar foe. The Lady Eagles struggled at the free throw line and proved unable to make the shot that mattered most in a 67-63 conference tournament loss to Middle Georgia State.
Faulkner had an opportunity in the waning seconds as Middle Georgia turned the ball over with 36.6 seconds remaining. Faulkner called a timeout and got in the offensive set it wanted but could not execute it as the ball sprung free. A scrum on the floor ended with
Ashlyn Adkins holding the ball and looking to pass it into the paint to
Morgan Holland when Faulkner took a timeout with 22 seconds to play.
Faulkner drew up one final sequence and got the ball into the hands of Adkins. The senior guard's shot attempt caromed off the rim and into the hands of MGA's Destiny Kincaide.
Faulkner struggled offensively to start the game. The Lady Eagles made only two field goals in the first 8:30 of the game before cutting a 15-point deficit to seven to end the period. The second quarter began similarly slow for Faulkner as the Lady Eagles failed to make a field goal until the 2:22 mark of the frame. Despite the struggles, Faulkner cut a 14-point deficit to nine by halftime.
The Knights took the lead back to 14 at the 8:44 mark of the third quarter before Faulkner put together a run to get itself back in the game. The Lady Eagles went on a 21-7 run to finish the third quarter tied at 44. Middle Georgia ran the lead back to seven at the 3:56 mark of the fourth quarter on a Destanee Wright bucket before Faulkner worked back to within two to set up the game's final sequence.
Faulkner shot just 29 percent from the floor in the first quarter and 23 percent in the second quarter. The Lady Eagles' second half offensive output ran the squad's overall shooting percentage up to 40.7 for the game. Faulkner also missed 14 free throws out of 27 attempts in the loss.
Adkins finished with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Channing Gafford totaled 13 points and 11 rebounds. Holland tallied 13 points. The loss came in the fifth meeting of the season between the two teams. The loss in the semifinals of the SSAC Women's Basketball Championship sees Faulkner end its campaign at 14-13.
