Faulkner falls short in scrap with Mobile

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Despite a cold shooting night, the Faulkner Lady Eagles still played the Mobile Rams close in Tine Davis Gymnasium Friday night, and had a chance to send it to overtime after two missed Mobile free throws with four seconds left. However, after calling timeout, Faulkner's play did not go as scripted as Mobile drew excellent coverage off the inbound. The Lady Eagles could not get off the potential game-tying shot, giving the visitors the 62-59 win.

"Yeah, we were really trying to get a double screen for [Channing Gafford]. And so, we were running Ashlyn [Adkins] off of a double screen to try to curl, and then have Chan come right back off of it," said Coach Reed Sutton of the final play. "And Chan's so good at finding little gaps. But we were also, you know, Ryann [Sylvester]'s a 56% 3-point shooter, and so, if we couldn't get it to Chan, we were going to slide Ryann right into that corner, and try to go that way. We had plenty of time to make a pass or two to get that thing off, but they did a good job defending it. They did a really good job switching out on who they needed to switch out on, and then they really did a good job closing out on Ashlyn, who can usually find a way to get her shot off."

Faulkner went into halftime trailing 23-20, having made only seven of 27 shot attempts. Mobile won the game without a single long-range shot. However, the Rams won the rebounding battle 44-35, with 40 points in the paint to Faulkner's 24. Gafford tied the score seven seconds into the second half, but three consecutive Mobile buckets, and a 57.89 percent mark in the quarter put the Rams in the driver's seat. Faulkner had a much more accurate second half as well, converting half of its three-point attempts, but Mobile had an answer for each Lady Eagle push.

Gafford tied a career high with 23 points, five boards and two steals. Adkins tallied eight points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Reserve Morgan Holland provided a spark with 13 points, five boards and three assists. Artasia McDowell carried Mobile, racking up 26 points, 15 rebounds and five dimes. Claire Worth had six points, seven boards and two blocks.

Faulkner does not have much time to regroup, as Thomas University comes to Tine Davis for a Sunday afternoon tilt.
