Faulkner season comes to end in Kansas City

Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Faulkner's magnificent season came to an abrupt halt Thursday night as the No. 4 seed Faulkner Eagles fell 88-83 to a hot-shooting No. 13 seed in the Jamestown Jimmies.

The Jimmies relied upon the Great Plains Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year Mason Walters in the first half before Mark Kjos began repeatedly knocking down threes from beyond NBA range in the second half.

Faulkner got a C.J. Williamson free throw ahead of an Austin Rogers bucket to cut the deficit to 81-80 before Kjos hit a backbreaker from well beyond the arc to move the lead to 84-80 with only 29.2 seconds to play. The Eagles missed a look at a three on the other end before fouling Jamestown and sending Will Cordes to the line with 19.1 to play. The freshman guard knocked down both free throws to put it away.

Despite being the top seed, Faulkner fought from underneath most of the night against Jamestown. Walters dominated the paint in the first half for the Jimmies, recording a double-double before the intermission. In the second half, Faulkner shifted to more of a zone look and largely neutralized Walters. Jamestown countered with Kjos flashing in-the-gym range with which he repeatedly knocked down shots from just a few steps inside the NAIA logo.

Kjos finished with 26 points including eight made threes on 12 attempts. Walters finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds for Jamestown.

Faulkner scuffled to start offensively, making just five of its first 20 field goal attempts in the game. Williamson got things moving early and often for the Eagles, however, as he scored 17 points in the first half on the way to 28 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists in the game.

Jordan Hamlette contributed 23 points and five assists. Austin Rogers finished with 12 points while Garrett Sanderson had 11.Faulkner shot 50 percent from the floor and 36 percent from three in the game. The Eagles turned the ball over nine times while forcing 19 Jamestown turnovers. The
Jimmies made 55 percent of their shots from the floor including 48 percent from three on 14 makes.

The loss ends Faulkner's season at 26-3. Faulkner's last win at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City came March 14, 2013 against Xavier.
