VALLEY, Ala. – Faulkner bounced back from last week's loss to Reinhardt by scoring in every quarter on the way to a 38-21 road victory over Point Saturday.
Faulkner opened the scoring on its second drive of the game when
Kade Young hit
Isaiah Scott for an 85-yard touchdown strike with 8:49 remaining in the opening quarter. After a quick defensive stand, the Eagles took over their next possession at their own 1. On the second play of the drive, the Skyhawk defense jumped offsides and
Kade Young capitalized with a shot play to
Jalen Browder that went for 98 yards, marking the longest play from scrimmage in Faulkner history and putting the Eagles up two scores. The play surpassed Terrance Craig's 97-yard rushing touchdown that occurred on Oct. 13, 2007 against Huntingdon. That play had stood as the longest from scrimmage for the Eagles since the program's inaugural season. The previous record for longest pass play came Nov. 16, 2013 when Josh Hollingsworth hit A.J. Stevenson for a 96-yard scoring strike against Kentucky Christian.
Point's Chase Turner intercepted a pass late in the first quarter to help set up the Skyhawks' first touchdown of the game. Keenan Wise ultimately got the home team on the board with 12:06 left in the second quarter when he scored from four yards out to cut the deficit in half.
Faulkner covered 50 yards on nine plays with its next possession only to see Young's quarterback keeper stuffed short of the goal line to hand the ball back to Point. The Skyhawks worked the ball to their own 37 before
Darien Gulley pounced on a Point fumble to get his offense back on the field.
A 20-yard Young sprint followed by an 11-yard toss to Browder got the Eagles in position for
Qua Tucker's first career rushing touchdown to put Faulkner up 21-6.
Undaunted, Point drove right back down the field and scored on a Brenton White pass to Timothy Gary that covered 37 yards and cut the deficit to 21-14.
The score stayed there until Faulkner's second drive of the third quarter. The Eagles started the possession at their own 21 before a pair of Charles Blackmon rushes got them to the 34. Young then followed with a 57-yard strike to Scott that took the ball to the Point 9. A pass interference penalty and an unsportsmanlike conduct call got the ball to the 1 where
Hunter Gibson punched it in for the 28-14 advantage.
Point fired right back again on its ensuing drive, covering 75 yards on 12 plays and capping it with a touchdown run from Sensir Carnes to cut it to 28-21.
Faulkner's next possession milked nearly six minutes off the game clock as it utilized 11 plays to cover 69 yards. Gibson punctuated the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run to leave it at 35-21.
Point's attempt to answer lasted only five plays before
Ovurton Gates picked off a pass at the Skyhawk 30. The turnover led to an 37-yard field goal from
Alvin Renteria to leave the Eagles up 38-21.
Young finished his day with 289 yards passing and 30 on the ground. Gibson added 96 yards rushing on 18 carries. Scott hauled in six passes for 174 yards while Browder caught three for 115 yards.
Alex Dawson paced the defense with 10 total tackles.
Faulkner (4-2, 3-1 MSC Appalachian Division) finishes its season with a pair of home games as it hosts St. Andrews and Bluefield.
