Faulkner splits doubleheader with Martin Methodist

PULASKI, Tenn. – Faulkner hit the road Tuesday to split a mid-week doubleheader with former conference foe Martin Methodist.

MARTIN METHODIST 7, FAULKNER 3

Martin Methodist rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to beat Faulkner 7-3 in the first game of the doubleheader.

Faulkner opened the scoring in the top of the first when Sam Anthony reached home on an error. The Redhawks plated two in the home half of the first to go up 2-1 before Faulkner fought back in the second. Justice Lucas stroked a sacrifice fly to left to drive in John Michael Mathews to make it 2-2. The Eagles took the lead in the fourth when Alex Arauz scored on a wild pitch. Martin Methodist tied it again in the bottom of the fourth before mounting its game-winning rally in the fifth.

FAULKNER 6, MARTIN METHODIST 3

Faulkner trailed 3-1 until the top of the fourth when Anthony doubled home Lucas and Justin Lara to tie the game. Anthony then scored the go-ahead run on an errant throw to put Faulkner up 4-3. The Eagles added a run in the fifth on a Lara walk that pushed home Arauz. Isaac Phillips added a leadoff homer in the seventh to cap the scoring.

Ford Hilyer (2-0) struck out nine batters over six and two-thirds innings of work while scattering three hits and allowing three earned runs for the win. Mathews took the ball for the first time in his collegiate career and pitched the Eagles out of a jam to end the game, earning his first save.

Faulkner (24-5) returns to play Friday when it hosts Mobile in a conference series.
