Blue Mountain, Miss. – Faulkner got a pair of strong pitching performances Friday to take both ends of a doubleheader from Blue Mountain and sweep the season series.
FAULKNER 11, BLUE MOUNTAIN 1
Faulkner got to Blue Mountain standout Montanna Smith early in game one of the series, hanging three runs on the board in the top of the first inning.
Kendall Bennett opened the scoring by driving in
Shelbie Burbage with a single to left.
Ashton Fielding followed with a single to plate
Taylor Eddy and make it 2-0.
Caity Jo Lee later drove in Bennett with grounder to push the lead to 3-0.
The Lady Eagles rallied for three more runs in the top of the third as Eddy doubled and scored on an errant throw. Fielding doubled home Bennett to move it to 5-0. Lee hit a sacrifice fly to plate Fielding for the 6-0 lead.
Faulkner scored six runs in the top of the sixth to put the game away. Eddy singled in
Madison McKee before a Bennett hit-by-pitch plated
Brianna Cagle. Fielding singled in Burbage and Eddy to push it to 10-1. McKee's bases-loaded walk pushed in Fielding to cap the scoring.
Nicole Morrison (4-0) struck out seven batters over six innings, scattering four hits and a walk while allowing one earned run.
FAULKNER 3, BLUE MOUNTAIN 0
The Lady Eagles won a decidedly different contest in game two of the doubleheader as they managed two runs in the top of the third and another in the fifth for the 3-0 victory. Burbage started the frame with a single to left and later scored on a Bennett grounder to put Faulkner up 1-0. Fielding singled home Eddy for the 2-0 advantage. Eddy scored on a passed ball in the fifth to move the lead to 3-0.
That was enough for
Katelynn Inness (4-3) who struck out eight batters over seven innings while allowing only two hits and issuing four walks.
The heart of the Faulkner batting order, Bennett and Fielding, combined for eight of the Lady Eagles' 12 RBIs in the sweep.
Faulkner (21-9, 11-3 SSAC) returns to play Tuesday when it travels to Judson College.
