Faulkner prevails in back-and-forth affair at Stillman

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Stillman held the two largest leads of the day but Faulkner weighted the scoreboard when the final buzzer sounded as the Eagles snagged a 61-58 SSAC road win Saturday. The contest stayed tight for 40 minutes with the lead changing 10 times, the score being tied five times and neither team leading by more than five at any point.

The final lead volley of the contest culminated with 4:13 to play in the game. Isaiah Brook sunk two free throws with 7:43 to play to tie the game before Jalon Perry put the Eagles on top with a jumper at the 5:52 mark. Daviyon Dennis drained a three 30 seconds later to put Stillman back on top 54-53. Perry muscled the Eagles back into the lead for the final time with 4:13 left when he dropped in a layup to put Faulkner on top 55-54.

Perry added a jumper at the 2:03 mark to stretch the advantage to three. Virgil Fields responded in kind with 1:31 to play. Trace Hill connected on a jumper at 1:02 before Fields answered again with 27 seconds left. Stillman then committed five consecutive fouls to get to the bonus and put Faulkner on the line in an effort to extend the game. Perry connected on both ends of the one-and-one to set the final score.

Stillman outpaced Faulkner in the percentage categories, knocking down 40.7 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from three. Faulkner shot just 36.1 percent from the floor and 13.6 percent from three. The Eagles, however, hoisted 72 shots in the game as compared to 59 by Stillman. The road team also took the rebound margin 42-40 and turned the ball over six less times than the Tigers.

C.J. Hines topped Faulkner with 20 points. Perry added 12 in the effort. Jamel Cleveland pulled 10 rebounds to pace Faulkner in the category.

The win marked the third of the season for Jake Mitchell as acting head coach as Scott Sanderson missed the contest due to health reasons.
