Faulkner defense spins up win over Talladega

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner forced 23 turnovers Thursday night on the way to an 85-57 SSAC victory over Talladega. The Tornadoes scuffled against the Faulkner press, enabling the Eagles to lead second chance points 25-14 in the blowout win.

Daniel Garmendia's shot with 10:35 to go in the first half put Faulkner up 16-14, igniting a 13-2 run that stretched the Eagle lead to 27-16.

After a Talladega turnover in the waning seconds of the first half, C.J. Hines drained a contested three at the buzzer to push the Faulkner lead to 21 points. The game scarcely tightened in the second half as Faulkner stretched the advantage to as many as 31 points.

Faulkner made 54.4 percent of its shots from the floor and 40.6 percent of its shots from deep as well as 91 percent of its free throws. Talladega made 43.8 percent of its field goals and 41.7 percent of its threes.

Faulkner lost the rebounding battle 32-25 but got a major boost from its bench as the Eagles led the margin 41-14.

Trace Hill topped Faulkner in scoring with 16 points. Garmendia added 14 points on just seven shots from the floor. Hines had 12 points to go along with six rebounds and eight assists. Raygan Edmondson finished with 11 points while Elijah Jones had 10.

Faulkner (5-0, 2-0 SSAC) returns to action Monday when it opens its three-game slate in the Battle at the Beach in Panama City, Fla. The No. 9 Eagles will take on the No. 10 ranked LSU-Shreveport Pilots Monday at 4 p.m.
